ITLS eTrauma

ITLS unveiled eTrauma in November 2009.  Virginia ITLS is in the process of reviewing the program to determine how or if it can be implemented in our program. Here is how the eTrauma program is designed to function according to ITLS International:

ETrauma is another opportunity to obtain ITLS Advanced and Basic Certification that incorporates the ease of taking the didactic section online at the student’s convenience, at home or at work, and then doing the hands-on practical and testing in a standard class setting.

The first phase of ITLS eTrauma is the online course which presents the eight hours of ITLS Provider classroom instruction to fit students' diverse needs. The program is self-paced and flexible to meet the time constraints of students who juggle multiple commitments and for those looking for continuing education hours in trauma specifically or in emergency care in general.  The ITLS eTrauma online course material is based on the didactic chapters of the 6th edition ITLS for Prehospital Care Providers manual, and the program's 13 lesson modules correspond to the Provider course lectures. The multimedia interactive lessons utilize video clips, click-and-drag matching exercises, new case studies, quiz questions, and more to maximize learning and retention. Students register for either the Advanced-level or Basic-level course to ensure that they are tested only on material appropriate to their skill level.

The ITLS eTrauma online portion includes the 6th edition ITLS for Prehospital Care Providers textbook and sells for $132.  It also includes 8 hours of continuing education credit from CECBEMS, the Continuing Education Coordinating Board for Emergency Medical Services, upon the student's successful completion of the program. (At this time it has not been approved by the Virginia Office of EMS for continuing education credit but is being reviewed.).  Once the eTrauma program is successfully completed by the student, a certificate of participation will be generated allowing the candidate to attend the second phase (Completer Course) within one year.

In order to obtain ITLS Provider Certification the individual must also attend and successfully complete an eTrauma “Completer Course.”   The Completer course is a one day practical skills and testing course in the standard classroom setting.   The initial cost of the Complete Course has not been determined but is being reviewed and will include the current $35 ITLS certification fee will, plus additional onsite cost.
