Representation and Opportunities for Involvement
To The Board of Directors:
In November 1997, Dr. Kimberly Keith urged formal establishment of a liaison
between the College and Virginias Emergency Medicine Residency programs. The Board
concurred and directed that each residency director be asked to appoint a resident to
serve as a non-voting member of the Board. They further directed that if the participation
was continuously supported by the residency programs, a Bylaws amendment could be
developed to formally establish the position with full voting privileges.
The first residents to serve in this capacity were
appointed by their directors and attended their first meeting July 1998: from Eastern
Virginia Medical School, Dr. Edward McLaughlin; and from the University of Virginia, Dr.
Devin Bateman. In July 2000, the residency at Medical College of Virginia opened and
Dr. Shawn Borich received appointment as our liaison. Resident Liaisons to VACEP Board: 2007-2008 Term
To The ACEP Council:
In February 2000, Dr. Peter Weimerskirch
recommended the College establish a Resident Alternate Councillor position to further
provide leadership development opportunities. The Board concurred and in July 2000, Dr.
Andrew Cole reported Residency Program Directors were supportive and agreed to identify
residents to serve as Alternate Councillors on a rotating schedule, in order of date the
programs were established. The College helps defray expenses through an annual budget
allocation. If participation is continuous and supported by the programs, a Bylaws
amendment will be developed to permanently establish this position.
The first Resident Alternate Councillor, Dr. Michael
Watts, EVMS, attended the 2000 ACEP Council meeting in Philadelphia.
To Committees:
Resident members are encouraged to attend meetings
and serve on committees of interest to them. Voting privileges are extended to resident
committee members.
To Educational Programs:
VACEP resident members may attend any VACEP-sponsored
CME program tuition free, although a minimal fee may be charged for certain food or
beverage functions in which they participate.
A "career planning" program is under development by
the Education Committee, and suggestions for content are requested from residents.
Research Recognition:
The Chapter's McDade Award gives residents an
opportunity for recognition of their research projects.
Virginia-based Military Residency Programs:
Resident members of the Government Services ACEP
chapter may participate in CME programs as if they are VACEP resident
members; verification letter from their residency director required. These residents are
also welcome and encouraged to attend any Membership, Board or committee meetings, however
no formal liaison relationship or voting privileges are available.
