Ray Honored as 2005 Career Achievement Award Recipient

Gaylord W. Ray, MD, FACEP of Gloucester was honored with the 2005 Career Achievement Award by the Virginia College of Emergency Physicians (VaCEP) at its annual meeting held February 16th, 2005, at the Homestead Resort, Hot Springs, VA.

This award is given annually for outstanding contributions to the College and to the specialty of emergency medicine over a prolonged duration.  The attributes exemplified include inspiration, innovation, dedication, administration and outstanding clinical care.

During his 28 year career as an emergency physician, Dr. Ray has been a dedicated and effective advocate for patients, emergency medicine physicians, and emergency medical services in Virginia.

Dr. Ray began his practice of emergency medicine at Rappahannock General Hospital in 1977, and Riverside Walter Reed Hospital in 1980, until moving to Halifax Regional Hospital, South Boston, in 1994. He retired from active practice and returned to the Gloucester area in 2003.

Dr. Ray has unselfishly served his communities through active involvement with area rescue squads by providing training and serving as their medical director. Among his many EMS accomplishments, Dr. Ray was appointed to the Governor’s EMS Advisory Board in 1984 and served on key committees for Manpower & Training, Advanced Life Support and Medical Control through 1990. In 1986 he received the Peninsulas Award for EMS, and in 1989 he received the Governor’s Award for Outstanding EMS Medical Director. He served as State EMS Medical Director for the Virginia Department of Health from 1991-1993.

Dr. Ray served on the VaCEP Board of Directors 1983-85 and 1994-95, and served as its EMS Committee chairman 1984-85. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Ray lives in Gloucester with his wife Cindy. While retired from emergency medicine practice, Dr. Ray continues to immerse himself in promoting education and training opportunities for EMS personnel on the Peninsulas.

VaCEP is the emergency medicine specialty society representing over 500 member physicians in Virginia. Its mission is to promote and protect the interests of emergency physicians and the patients they serve. We are proud and honored to have him as a colleague.
