Counselman Honored as 2001 Career Achievement Award Recipient

This award is given to VACEP members in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the College and the specialty of Emergency Medicine. On February 13th we honored Francis L. Counselman, MD, FACEP.

Since 1984 Dr. Counselman has represented the specialty of emergency medicine with dedication and leadership. He is the longest serving Director of an Emergency Medicine Residency training program and Chair of an academic Emergency Medicine Department in Virginia; and is one of only three full professors of Emergency Medicine in the Commonwealth.

In 1999 Dr. Counselman was named Distinguished Professor of Emergency Medicine, a permanent title that is accompanied by a one half million dollar grant for the department. He also received the Dean’s Faculty Achievement Award by Community Faculty from Eastern Virginia Medical School for significant involvement and excellence in teaching, research and institutional advancement. In 1992 he received the Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine Award for significant contribution to graduate medical education.

For ten years (1989-1999) Dr. Counselman served as a member, a liaison and as an officer on VACEP’s Board of Directors. He has represented the College as a councillor to the ACEP Council and as a Delegate to the Medical Society of Virginia. In addition, he has been a member of the VACEP Education Committee since 1989 and chaired the committee for six years. On the national level he has served on a number of committees. He was named the ACEP representative to the Residency Review Committee for Emergency Medicine. He also served as member and Chair of the Academic Affairs Committee.

As further support of his dedication he also serves as an ambassador for emergency medicine in local and state medical organizations; not to mention his service on numerous committees —too many to list entirely! To name a few, these have included the Medical Society of Virginia; the Virginia Department of Health; Society for Academic Emergency Medicine; Society for Pediatric Emergency Medicine; Tidewater Center for Life Support; and the Norfolk Academy of Medicine.

Dr. Counselman is a Managing Editor of e-Medicine, and serves on the editorial board and reviewer for several medical journals. He has published 40 articles and authored a number of chapters in emergency medicine textbooks. In addition he has more than 30 invited presentations and has earned grants as principle investigator in four studies.

The award was presented during the annual membership meeting on February 13, held in conjunction with the 2001 Scientific Assembly at The Homestead in Hot Springs, VA.
