Included will be national E/M utilization statistics to help you identify how your practice compares to national and Virginia utilization statistics.

Overview of Emergency Department Observation Coding – Hospital and Professional – (Edelberg & Gaines) Observation coding continues to undergo revisions for Medicare billing. ED clinicians are required to know the difference to assure that documentation provides the necessary details to allow accurate coding. This presentation will discuss coding and documentation requirements for both the hospital and professional billing.

Emergency Department Procedures – Hospital and Physician – (Edelberg & Gaines) How the emergency department clinician documents op notes determines how services can be billed. What the emergency medicine team documents, combined with the services of consultants, determines how the hospital can bill for these important services. A discussion of the documentation and coding requirements for common ED services will include orthopedic services, wound care, foreign body removals, and infusions and injections will be provided.

CMS and Medicaid – How This Collaboration Will Affect Your Practice – (Edelberg & Gaines) Medicare has assumed responsibility for auditing of Medicaid providers and payers and cautions that self disclosure of coding errors will avoid penalties that will be assessed when audits occur. This presentation will provide an update of CMS oversight of the Medicaid program with examples of coding issues you may want to avoid. |

Review of Critical Care Coding and Documentation (Edelberg) Critical care and trauma activation are common components of ED coding but a review of how to determine critical care, how clinicians are required to document and when trauma activation can be coded will be discussed. Common examples of critical care clinical scenarios will be discussed.

Billing 101 for Emergency Physicians (Gaines) Regardless of how long you have been in practice, billing rules continue to evolve and you are at risk if your billing isn’t done correctly. This presentation will provide an update on hot topics in ED billing to include payer audit plans, billing and refund requirements, provider numbers (who needs them and what you do while you’re waiting!)

Case Review (Edelberg) Putting theory into practice is a necessity for emergency medicine coding professionals and clinicians who are responsible for overseeing the coding program for an emergency department practice. This session will provide several ED cases as examples of common ED coding challenges and provide open discussion of frequent controversial coding issues
