Cardiac Biomarkers - Angela Straface, MD, FACEP

Participants of this 2 part lecture will:

  • Discuss challenges associated with diagnosing Acute Coronary Syndromes (ACS) and Heart Failure (HF)
  • Discuss a multi-marker strategy and how it brings value for the ED physician
  • Examine the utilization of a rapid algorithm to aid in the recognition and management of ACS
  • Review the use of B-type Natriuretic Peptide (BNP) as an aid in the diagnosis and assessment of disease severity in patients with HF and the role of cardiac markers and BNP for risk stratification in ACS
  • Discuss evidence based indication of use for cardiac markers and BNP at Point-of-Care through review of current literature & impact on patient care and global hospital outcomes
  • Discuss the use of Biosite Triage at Medical Center of Arlington; discuss the outcomes that the hospital has realized as a result of implementing this POC solution in the ED

Patient Satisfaction - Peter J. Paganussi, MD, FACEP

The participant will be made aware of and be able to use the different methods used to measure patient satisfaction in the ED, methods commonly used to improve ED patient satisfaction scores, novel approaches to improving scores, and a look at a newer, patient-driven satisfaction tool on the horizon.

  • The fundamental issues regarding the need for early intervention of all therapies:

               a. early goal-directed therapy: fluids, vasopressors, inotropes

               b. antibiotic administration

               c. source control              

               d. steroids, recombination activated protein C and glucose control

Sepsis - Part #2 - Converting Science to Reality - Emmanuel Rivers, MD

The participants of this lecture will learn:

  • Case examples: Converting knowledge to practice
  • The importance of these interventions and how to adopt them at your institution
  • A review of the current literature of how effective ED sepsis management changes outcome and decreases health care costs and length of stay
  • The future of sepsis management
